The ancient Akragas, one of the largest Greek towns

UNESCO heritage since 1997 the Valley of Temples is renowned for history, archeology and nature. The site also offers interesting attractions with beautiful sand beaches, white cliffs and outdoor activities along the southern coast of Sicily. Akragas was founded by the Greeks in the VI century b.C. and built on the hill to control the land and the coast on the Mediterranean sea. During the Greek-Carthaginian and the Roman historical period it was one of the most important Mediterranean towns. The Valley of Temples is one of the largest archeological parks of Europe: the ancient town was larger than now and extended all over the hill at the back of the present area. Walking in the Valley is a time travel through the remains of art and architecture masterpieces of 25 centuries ago; the Temple of Concordia is one of the most preserved Greek temples in the World. Along the Temples road you can visit the Regional Museum of Archaeology and the Church San Nicolo' of XII century. In Agrigento city center you find the Cathedral of San Gerlando and other interesting monuments built in the typical local yellow sandstone.
