UNESCO site since 2002. Caltagirone is a pretty town in the South-East of Sicily on a hill at 600 mt (1970 ft) of elevation. The name of Arabic origin "Qal'at-al-Jarar" (fortress of the clays) describes the high position and the pottery activity during the centuries. The town is renowned for the production of ceramics, activity present in the history from the early Siculo-Greek and then Roman period, until nowaday. Art ceramic shops and artisan laboratories with production of on demand unique pieces are present in the streets of the attractive city center. Together with the ceramic production Caltagirone offers interesting artistic, historical and cultural attractions: Museum of Ceramics, Museum of Nativity, Museum of Sicilian Puppets, Art Institute for Ceramics, Public Garden, Church San Francesco, Bridge San Francesco, Borbonic Prison, Cathedral San Giuliano, Staircase and Church Santa Maria del Monte, Gallery Don Luigi Sturzo.
